The biggest difference between this perspective and one that might prefer moderation is the belief that gun regulations have done nothing. The shootings at Virginia Tech and Newtown show that regulation hinders law abiding citizens rather than the people who would buy and sell guns illegally. If everyone had the ability to own the guns they want, tragedies such as the Virginia Tech and Newtown shootings could be prevented.
Gun regulations have been imposed since the late 1900s. In 2001, “
dealers were forbidden to sell handguns that were not approved by the government, after rigorous laboratory testing, funded by the manufacturer
”. Owning a gun is difficult, but there are constant gun control laws being passed with little to no change. The Virginia Tech shootings or the Newtown shootings show that legislature has to be increased, but these shootings still occur.
With these mass shootings occurring, large newspapers in other countries scrutinize the United States for not dealing with gun violence. Writer James Wilson argues that the claims are “strange”. He states that “
At least two papers said we should ban semiautomatic assault weapons (even though the killer did not use one); [while] another… wrote that gun violence is becoming more common (when in fact the U.S. homicide rate has fallen dramatically over the last dozen years)
”.
Gun regulation is not the answer. Removing the imposing gun regulations would at least make it more simple for law abiding citizens to acquire and safely own guns. Rather than ban guns or make it difficult to own one, “
the tragedy at Virginia Tech may tell us something about how a young man could be driven to commit terrible actions
”. A better solution would be to stop gun control laws, and instead spend that time and energy trying to help the mentally ill. There are plenty of other solutions, but gun control is not useful or protective in any way.
